Rental kit in Korea *READ THIS*

The reason this club has invested in full sets of scuba gear for all students and member use is because of the low quality of kit you can rent in Korea.

To rent a full set of kit for a day is about W30,000 to 40,000 and each tank of air is W10-15,000 depending on where you go. Kit can be rented from any dive resort upon showing your Padi card. So what's the problem?

BCD's (The diving "jacket")

I've seen these with leaking hoses and absent (yes, entirely missing) waist releases.
I've seen low pressure inflator connectors so corroded that experienced divers thought they were connected when they weren't...
I've seen BCD's blowing bubbles from every connection (worn out/missing o-rings) and the shop not willing or able to replace them.
Even the ones that work Ok are many years old and were the cheapest available in the decade they were bought!

Regulator sets

These NEVER come with an octopus in Korea if you rent them. The octopus is the second (yellow) regulator that is responsible for so many averted diving accidents...
I've heard of reg sets so poorly maintained that the mouthpiece has come away from the regulator. Think about his happening to you if you don't have an octopus. If you were at 30 M and you have already taken a lungful of water...
In this particular case the same regulator failed in the same way a week later because the staff at the resort didn't think it was worth fixing...

Conclusion

It's not possible to single out a single dive resort to avoid. Rental equipment is about the same everywhere you go with the exception of Big Blue 33 on Jeju island.

So,

1 If you already have dive gear, bring it to Korea.

2 If you are paying hard earned cash for a Padi course, demand safe kit. At least an octopus...

3 Check your instructor has insurance FOR YOU as well as himself.

As use of an octopus is a Padi standard there can never be an excuse for it not being provided.

Hi Danny,

Yes, in Korea. Everything listed minus the mouthpiece coming free (twice) I saw with my own eyes at dive resorts on the East coast from Sockcho to Pohang.

The mouthpiece story came firsthand from a NAUI instructor (name on request) who had this happen to one of his students at a dedicated dive pool in Korea (thankfully, I can no longer remember the name of the pool).

I am reporting this but neither I or my students are troubled by it as I NEVER rent a BCD or reg set for my students.

Frankly, 99% of this I saw years ago when I was associated (as a non-professional) with another club that rented all their student and tour equipment.

I wish I could say it was all changed but I recently rented a BCD (for myself, long story) at a really reputable dive pool and, yes, it had a slow leak ^^ Not really a safety issue but a real pain in the a** re: buoyancy.

Danny, if your RENTAL BCD's and Reg sets have octopuses and are regularly serviced, well maintained and in good order I really applaud you. You will be almost unique on the Korean East coast.
